Elementary Art Show Press Release
2016/04/25
Palm View Elementary Art Show
Palm View Elementary students’ artwork will be on display at the Palmetto Historical Park starting with an opening reception on May 7th 2-4pm. Light refreshments will be served; please RSVP to tori.edwards@manateeclerk.com or 941-723-4991. The exhibit will be up through May 27th, with elementary students’ art viewable during regular opening hours (Tuesday through Friday, as well as the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month, 10am-noon & 1-4pm).
In addition to the elementary students’ artwork, pieces done by their instructor, Omarr Otero, will also be on display. Mr. Otero, who teaches at both Palm View Elementary and Ringling School of Art and Design, approached the Palmetto Historical Commission about collaborating on this show to give his students a new, exciting opportunity. Palm View Elementary is a Title I school, which means that a high percentage of the students come from economically disadvantaged homes. Title I is a federally funded educational program that aims to “level the playing field” by providing supplemental supplies and technology in schools with the highest concentration of poverty. To make the most of funds, Mr. Otero consistently uses recycled materials as art supplies and has themed this show around Recycling and Robots: “I started thinking I would like to use something popular to work with recycling. I thought of Star Wars since the kids are so into it and I know a lot about it. I decided to do something that was all basic shapes so all levels could do it. I easily made an R2D2 with an oval, 5 squares and 2 circles. This was a quick way to get them doing something they could be proud of, introduce them to recycling and do something fun along the way.”
The address of the Historical Park is 515 10th Ave. West, Palmetto.
